what would YOU do first as president?

conversation between james and i last night, during one of the many tivo pauses of the presidential debate:

james: seriously, if I was elected president, that’s the first thing I would do.
amy: what?
james: torture. In my mind, that’s the most heinous thing that needs to be corrected.
amy: You know, that’s one thing John McCain supposed to defy Bush on, but he’s slipped a time or two.
james: The torture, it’s just despicable. First day in office, that’s what I’d do.
*amy just stares at him.*
amy: Really?
james: yeah.
amy: the VERY FIRST THING?
james: absolutely.
amy: Oh, I don’t think so. I think there’s something you’d do first.
james: what?
amy: come on! you’re finally president! you’re PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! you KNOW you’d crack open all the super classified shit and find out the real deal about aliens!

I know that’s what I’d do. What would you do?

    I insist that you give credit and blame where they are due. McCain did more than “defy Bush” on torture; McCain *led* the fight against torture, condemned military and other sinister top brass, and took everyone to task in the Senate when dozens of others (including Democrats, Obama) were NOT doing anything about torture.

    YES, I think McCain should roundly condemn torture all the time. Everyone should. But I would be careful about calling voting on any one Senate bill “slipping up” as there is usually more to whether or not to vote on a bill, like when the amendments are slipped in to try to get everyone to vote for the other side’s pet cause because they couldn’t say no to torture, or aid relief, or whatever. You know how it is.

    I don’t care if we disagree about McCain, Obama, Palin, Hillary, whatever, but you mustn’t overlook that McCain was a leader in the fight against torture, a despicable practice and also as it happens my #1 issue and possibly my only wedge issue.
